Let’s take a walk, you and I,
and leave everything else behind
except for the words on this page;
we’ll only be a minute.
What can I offer in such little time?
A healthy break from mindless swipes.
At the very least we’ll delight
in each other’s rapt attention.
By looking up we’ll also connect
with the attention spans we possess
inside our minds’ locus coeruleus.
Our “blue spot,” as it’s better known,
chooses what we attend to and for how long
and is targeted by all — including me I confess
seeking a bit of your time.
Crooks, commercials and politicians
each shout their own appeal.
What chance does a poet stand
against the gleam of chrome or a hawker’s hate?
Yet today somehow I did and I do
share this minute walk with you.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
