Peonies by Tina MacNaughton

on

we all have little ones in there
she says, with a faint smile on her lips

tiny buds promised petalled froth
and candy floss
now pink-veined, ribboned
silky green nubs suggest…
something

days, weeks pass yet nothing

something will come from nothing
she says, with a gentle wave

I wait and watch…
watch and wait
for something

I see my heart in those satin pink pearls
unfurling, with a blush of scent
and yesterday’s desire

pretty as a post-coital flush
plump as a lover’s kiss-bruised lips
sweet breath fragrant with summer

we all have little ones in there
she says, plucking a petal with her fingertips.
