An Elegy by George Freek

I open my windows
to let in the spring air.
It seems overnight
birds have returned,
and flowers are suddenly there.
The sun rises
like a woman climbing
from her soft bed. Was it
like that the day we wed?
The wind is a harp,
singing in the trees.
I’ve invited friends
to drink some wine,
celebrating our anniversary,
as we did,
when you were alive.
While I wait, I watch
a cloud drifts away. It seems
like it had only arrived.
